On Thursday 25 October, our 6th annual OUTstanding Role Model lists were published, featuring 230 LGBT+ Executives, Allies, Future Leaders and Public Sector Executives who are working tirelessly to champion LGBT+ inclusion in their firms and beyond.
Included in those lists were six Irish role models, the greatest representation of Irish role models on our lists since their inception. In November 2017, we launched an official OUTstanding network in Ireland, with 14 members – the network has doubled in size since then.
The incredible growth and enthusiasm we have seen in Ireland should come as no surprise; Ireland was the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage by public vote. The support we’ve experienced since launching in Ireland reached a new peak as our team in Ireland was honoured to be joined by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, one of just three openly LGBT+ heads of government globally at our official launch of our OUTstanding lists in Ireland, in conjunction with the IDA and three of our Irish role models.
Martin Shanahan, CEO, IDA Ireland, and one of our OUTstanding Public Sector role models spoke on the importance of inclusion and how an inclusive workplace benefits not only LGBT+ employees, but everyone in an organisation. While the role model lists remain necessary, the end goal is to reach a point where being LGBT+ and a successful executive in business is not at all extraordinary. This is showcased in the IDA’s commitment to inclusion is at the core of their mission, earlier this year launching their internal LGBT+ and Allies network, and working since then with OUTstanding, their clients and partners to ensure this message and culture is well understood and appreciated. To top off the year and solidify the IDA’s commitment to LGBT+, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was invited to speak on the importance of LGBT+ inclusion and help launch the OUTstanding 2018 Role Model Lists in Ireland.
